the only thing worse than growin' up is never quite learnin' how

After many months of waiting, the Joel Plaskett Emergency's Make A Little Noise DVD has arrived. I picked it up the other day down at the ol' record shop, but I only got a chance to watch the DVD portion of it tonight. It also came with a mini-EP with 3 new tracks, all of which are pretty solid. Nowhere With You is the best of the set I'd say.

I've been waiting for this DVD to hit the shelves since I saw his solo concert last year with my bro and dad at Hugh's Room in Toronto. It's a pretty sweet little venue for solo acts and mellow shit. It was actually the second time we had seen him there, the previous show being a couple of years ago.

And I can't complain at all about the DVD either, it's pretty damn sweet. It's broken down into 3 sections, the first two being live tour footage, and the last section is all of his videos to date.

As it turns out, there's a few songs in the second live set that were recorded at Hugh's Room, but they were from the show he played the night before we saw him. And from what I remember the set he played the second night was better than the stuff that made it on the DVD. But whatever, it's still good.

It's cool to get all of his videos too, since Much Music has been a fucking disaster in the last decade. I've seen a couple of them before, but most of them were new to me. Ironically, I first heard about Plaskett on Much Music's Going Coastal show, so I can't complain too much. I remember the Maybe We Should Just Go Home video because I couldn't figure out how the hell they filmed the thing. There's a few shots where the camera seems to be floating above him and it kinda screws with your mind. There's also a few little bonus videos on the disc if you look around in the credits sections and stuff.

So if you haven't heard of the man, I highly recommend you check him out. You just might be the next life changed by Joel Plaskett.

He's got some catchy tunes and clever lyrics, especially if you've ever found yourself staring at your heart as it lies on the kitchen floor. The True Patriot Love video is something of a testament to that. He puts on an entertaining live show as well, and he's always there for the fans.

Can't wait for the next CD he puts out.

Plaskett is on my list of musical acts to explore. BTW...what you guys did to your brother was horrible...but slightly funny!
