Questioning my education

As fourth year comes to an end, and I struggle to ram as much info into my head as possible for the next week and a half of exams, I look back on my time at University thus far and try to put the school aspect of it into context.

In 1st year I learned how to get reasonable grades by doing the bare minimum of homework. Granted it was much harder than highschool ever was, but inherent smarts led me through.
2nd year I learned what it meant to struggle against massive doses of apathy and insomnia and still maintain an average that allowed me to continue attending this school.
3rd year I learned that no matter how much you think you know, there's always someone else that knows more than you. Personally, I never found that to be much of a motivator though.
And in 4th year I learned that I know a hell of alot more than marks will show, or exams can ever test. I learned that I could attain far more knowledge on my own accord compared to having some prof ram it down my throat in the form of excessive readings or complex labs.

The only problem I've found is this - the things I teach myself don't parallel my chosen academic life. I never go out of my way to learn about the genes in humans that activate x pathway, or the circuits of the brain that allow people to do y activity.

But I do have a massive amount of knowledge and understanding of many things that span many different fields of study. I've come to notice that not many people I come in contact with do this kind of thing, and it strikes me as somewhat strange. Granted, we're all paying a shitload of money to be here and to learn what our profs have to teach, yadda yadda, but it's amazing how few people around here seem to take learning upon themselves outside of school work.

I've learned a great deal about current events, the media, politics, history, war, marketing, computers, music, philosophy, art, psychology, etc. etc. and none of it has anything to do with either one of my Double Majors.

This kinda begs the question of what the hell am I doing in my program?
That question is answered by the fact that I can still do fine in my courses, and I still retain alot of what I learn in class. But is this really what I want to do for the rest of my life? I suppose many of my friends are asking themselves the very same thing, the only difference being that they'll be graduating this year and I won't.

Of late, a single phrase has been running through my head - Don't let it define you.
I'm not sure if I picked it up somewhere or just thought of it myself. And to be entirely honest I've been trying to figure out what I even mean when I say that.
The best way I can describe it is this: I see so many people that are easily labelled as "the quiet scientist", "the arrogant Ivey kid", or "the computer geek". It even applies to social life - you know one guy as "the drunk", a girl as "the sporty chick" or another guy as "the dude in the band".
Personally, I don't want to be remembered for any one thing in particular. There are so many people in life that we know for a time and then we part ways, never to meet again. It's my hope that people won't remember me as "the guy who wrote a blog" (that noone reads. haha), or "the big music fan", or "that opinionated asshole".

And that's why I take it upon myself to expand my horizons every day. I'll read an article, listen to a song, watch a movie, have a conversation. And unlike most, I follow it up with something else. Often I'll just look up shit on Wikipedia or Google and link around to find more details.
For example, look up the following:
  • Georgia Home Boy
  • Echolalia
  • Andrewsarchus
  • Passchendaele
  • Freud's Cocaine Letters
  • Bukowski
  • COINTELPRO
Interesting shit eh?

You might wanna inform yourself about other things too, lest you be remembered as "the fool who knew nothing".

On a bus to Atlantic City with a roll of quarters...

I often find it funny how America claims to be the apex of social evolution. Maher puts things into context.

Finding Iron

It's been awhile, so here's some news:

  • Two nights ago a few friends and I got to see the Blue Jays' home opener in Toronto, and even though they were facing KC, it was a pretty entertaining game. My bro got us tix in the 30th row, right behind home plate. My favourite part of the game was seeing Frank The Tank warm up for his at-bats with a lead pipe. Pretty ridiculous. We snuck in a few mickeys and got nice and shitfaced. On the way home I stuck my head out the car window on the Gardiner to proclaim how great the Jays are, and came back into the car only to find that one of the lenses in my glasses had been blown out onto the highway. Joy.

  • Tomorrow is the last day of classes for my 4th year here at school. The year has flown by faster than any other I'd say. Now it's exam time and I'm unprepared, as usual. Fortunately my first two exams this weekend are easier courses, so I have time to get ready for the tough ones. As usual I have 5 exams, while most of my friends have 2 or 3. Gotta love science.
  • As of now I have no job for the summer. But I do have a place to stay in town if I can get something together. There are numerous reasons why I don't want to go home, but if I'm forced to I suppose there's not much I can do. I'd like to pick up a part time job at a record store for the summer in addition to a regular 9-to-5 schedule. Especially since the new Matt Good album is due out this summer - and I want free posters and shite!
  • Speaking of, I've heard 4 tracks from the new album that have been streamed one after another on his site. Unfortunately they've all been taken down, but in a few months the record will be out anyway.
  • In politics, it seems that two men have lost their minds. Make that 3 men...
  1. John McCain - this toolbox claimed that any Joe Blow can walk the streets of Baghdad freely and without fear, and he set off to the market to prove it! Funny that he needed snipers on the rooftops, 3 Black Hawks, 2 Apaches, the most heavily armored Humvee in the army, and a few dozen troops to protect him. No fear - kinda reminds me of those tacky hats and shirts that had that slogan on them.
  2. Tom Delay - for some reason this idiot equates his personal indictments in the courts with the Holocaust. He pretty much blames the Left for anything he can, and it's pretty fucking sad how far (out in left field) he'll go to smear them. He even wrote a book that includes a passage that equates the Left to the Nazis. And here the rest of us thought Bush was a tad bit closer to Hitler than tree-hugging hippies... how stupid we must be!
  3. Bill O'Reilly - if you've never heard of this fucker, consider yourself lucky. I have heard of him, and I've heard many of the things he's said. Remember that kid in the States that was freed from his abductor and rapist after years of abuse? He blamed the kid. Remember that house fire that killed those kids awhile back? He turned that tragedy into a political point about illegal immigration, and pretty much said they got what they deserved. And now he's sparred with Geraldo regarding a drunk driving incident, which he again spun off topic to fuel his own irrational and intolerant viewpoints. It's amazing this douchebag still has a job, let alone any friends or family that would associate themselves with such a hate fulled man.
  • The NHL playoffs are back, and that means even less time will be spent on school-related material! I was ecstatic to see that those wretched Maple Leafs didn't make the final eight. My Pens aren't gonna make it past Ottawa, but they're young and inexperienced, so that's to be expected. I'm predicting a Sens/Sabres Eastern final and Sharks/Ducks final in the West. Odds are I'll be way off.
  • Canada has lost more troops over in Afghanistan this week. Donald S got all choked up on Coaches Corner tonight, and though I think he goes a little too far with the military stuff sometimes, I can only hope that he shines a light on a topic that most people don't usually concern themselves with. And once that happens, enough voters will realize that we have no reason to be in this "war on terror" in the first place. Unless you count playing lap-dog to the US a legitimate reason...
That's all I can think of for an update today. Now it's time to go catch some hockey.
